Is Washington Heights safe for white college students

Is Washington Heights safe for white college students?
My girlfriend and I just moved to the 193rd street/Audubon Ave area of Washington Heights, right near the high school and close to the big hill that takes you down into Inwood (about the only place we could afford). Nobody has given me any problems so far, but I was just wondering if I'm setting myself up for trouble or will I be safe in this neighborhood? I'm not trying to be racist at all. I don't have a problem with the hispanics...(If I did I wouldnt have moved here, duh!) but I'm just wondering if they will have a problem with me. People always get defensive if they feel the ethnic vibe of their neighborhood is being threatened.

I think you will be perfectly safe. Washington Heights / Inwood are much better than they were a few years ago.
Answer 2 :
wait...yup, I can hear it now, somebody is about to scream racism.
Answer 3 :
You will be safe. Washington Height's largest community is made of Dominicans and they are very friendly and kind. Like all areas in New York, there are isolated acts of crime, but I have walked up in my business suit at 9pm night in that same area without any problems and I look like I just popped out of a J Crew catalog.
Answer 4 :
The problem is you have folks living in the Heights for decades. They fear GENTRIFICATION of their neighborhood will cause the rents to skyrocket along with the prices in stores, thus forcing them out of Manhattan, and most likely New York. Just look what happened in Greenwich Village, totally gentrified.
Answer 5 :
There are murders in many areas of NYC. There are murders in Washington Heights. NYC is not known for safety. Perhaps you should stay inside your apartment until you feel comfortable going out. I would not live in Washington Heights! My and her daughter cousin were mugged in Washington Heights, when she lived up there.
Answer 6 :
I know quite a few white and asian people who have lived in WH for years without incident. Take the initiative to introduce yourself to some of your new neighbors (in spanish if appropriate) so that they know you're not an a_____, and so that you'll have people looking out for you in the event of an attempted robbery or something like that.
Answer 7 :
Gimme a break! NYC is the safest city in America, if you've read the papers lately. Crime occurs everywhere in the US, and NYC gets an unfair rap. I've lived in Washington Heights, and I used to work at Columbia U Med School. They are as safe as anyplace, and I'm a science geek from the Midwest.
